The geographical context of Quinta do Pinheiro
Vila Flôr is a Portuguese town located in the Alto Douro region - Bragança District - situated more than five hundred meters above sea level. Among the natural beauty of the parish, the vineyards and olive groves stand out.
The name "Vila Flôr" was first referenced in the charter granted on May 24, 1286, by King D. Dinis. According to tradition, during his visit to this land on the occasion of his meeting with his fiancée, D. Isabel, King D. Dinis was amazed by the beauty of the landscape, enhanced by its colorful diversity of wildflowers.
The municipality is part of the so-called "Terra Quente Transmontana", a sub-region with distinct characteristics in terms of climate, geology, natural vegetation, and human cultivation.
Vila Flôr is located in the Douro, a region dedicated to wine production, traditionally known for the demarcated region of Port Wine. With an exceptional Mediterranean climate, the Douro Valley is a warm and dry enclave, ideal for the cultivation of vines, olive trees, almond trees, and fruits such as cherries, figs, peaches, oranges, and apples.
In December 2001, UNESCO designated the Alto Douro Wine Region as a World Heritage Site. This title, awarded unanimously, recognized the world's oldest demarcated wine region, established by the Marquis of Pombal in 1756. It is a unique region, bringing together the virtues of schist soil and its privileged sun exposure.
